Gioachino Assereto. Tobias Healing
the Blindness of His Father. 15th century
According to the Bible, when Tobias returned, he cured his father's blindness with the gall taken from the fish. Tobit 11:11-13: "And took hold of his father: and he strake of the gall on his fathers' eyes, saying, Be of good hope, my father. And when his eyes began to smart, he rubbed them; And the whiteness pilled away from the corners of his eyes: and when he saw his son, he fell upon his neck." I wonder if any ophthalmologists ever try this prescription? Oil on canvas Musée des Beaux-Arts, Marseille |
