The artist El Greco was famed for his portraits with religious theme. His portraits always showed
elongated human figures and it has been suggested that he suffered from astigmatism. However,
experiment using volunteers wearing astigmatic lenses failed to confirm this. It seems that
the elongations favoured by El Greco were the result of artistic expression, not a visual symptom.
