Petrovich Filatov
Vladimir Petrovich Filatov (1875
– 1956) was born in Milkailovka South of Moscow and obtained his
medical degree in 1897 from the
University of Moscow. He became a lectuere and later professor of
Ophthalmology in Odessa.
His main claim to fame is the creation
of the first eye bank in 1931. In that year, he performed a
successful corneal transplant using
a donor eye stored in a moist chamber at 2 to 4 degrees
centigrade and popularized the
technique.
He died in Odessa in 1956 at the
age of 81. The stamp was issued by the Soviet Union in 1962.
