Austria (1976)
Robert Barany (1876-1936) was an
Austrian doctor who specialized in ENT.
He was awarded the Nobel prize
for his study in equilibrium. He showed
that nystagmus can be caused by
a disturbance in the labyrinth. He developed
the caloric test, in which cold
and hot water are used to assess the vestibular
apparatus by observing the eye
movement in response to ear syringing.
