Japan (1993) Umetaro
Suzuki (1874-1943) vitaminologist.
Suzuki was a noted vitaminologist.
He noticed that a component of rice bran was effective
in preventing beriberi. He was the first to discover aberic acid, now called
vitamin B1, in rice bran.
He later succeeded in isolating
vitamin B1. His other success included isolating and
extracting vitamin A from cod liver
oil. Vitamin B1 deficiency causes corneal
epithelial changes, ophthalmoplegia,
nystagmus, optic atrophy. Wernicke's
encephalopathy and Korsakoff's
encephalopathy are neurological
manifestations of vitamin B1 deficiency.
