What does the above specimen show? Answer Angle recession of the trabecular meshwork. This is usually caused by blunt trauma resulting in a tear in the plane of the longitudinal and meridional ciliary muscle. (see pictures below for comparison). What mechanisms may account for the raised intraocular pressure in this condition? . Answer Angle-recession can give rise to raised intraocular pressure in the long-term. The incidence is about 6%. The risk is related to the extent of the angle recession (ie. how many degrees of the trabecular meshwork is involved). The mechanism for the raised intraocular pressure is not fully understood but may be caused by: a. trauma to the trabecular meshwork resulting in structural changes. b. endothelium is stimulated by the trauma resulting in its proliferation which then covers the trabecular meshwork.
