What is the diagnosis and why? Answer Adenoid cystic carcinoma. The histology shows multiple lobules of basophilic tumour cells. The lobules contains pools of mucin which give the tumour a Swiss cheese (or cribriform) appearance. a What is the nature of this condition? a Answer The tumour usually presents as a rapidly growing mass with destruction of the orbital bone. Early perineural spread is common causing pain and intracranial metastasis. Exenteration with radiotherapy is the recommended treatment of choice. The 5-year survival rate is about 50%.
