Sir Peter Paul Rubens (1577 - 1640), Flemish
painter. He was the foremost exponent of Northern Baroque, he spent a period
of time in Italy and later settle in Antwarp and became court portrait
in 1609. He gained fame as a religious painter. On his visit to England
(1629 - 30), he was knighted by Charles I and executed several commission
for him. In additon to his portraits, he is best known for mythological
paintings featuring voluptuous female nudes as in this picture Venus and
Adonis. |
