The upper lid is functionally more important than the
lower lid in maintaining the integrity of the cornea.
The repair of the upper lid follows the same principles
as of the lower lids.
However, unlike the lower lids, there are some important
strucutres in the upper lids that need special attention to avoid complication
or undesirable results:

the lacrimal ductules in the lateral aspect of the eye may
be damaged if there is excessive manipulation of the fornix.

the levator function may be impaired if the upper lid is
left in tension
The techniques required for upper lid full thickness defect
depends on the extents of the defect.
