Rizal (1861-1896) was born in Laguna in the Filipino Island of Luzon. After
completing his school in his
native country he travelled to Spain to study at Madrid University where he obtained his medical degree. He gained his further study in Paris, Heidelberg and Berlin and trained as an ophthalmologist before returning home.
