1. easy to handle
2. minimal tissue reaction
3. does not support bacterial growth
4. high breaking strength
5. easy sterilization
6. no allergic reaction
7. no carcinogenic action
8. absorbed after serving its functionObviously there is no single suture material which can fulfil all these criteria. The surgeon should choose the best suture for the type of surgery that he/she is operating. The different types of suture materials can be broadly divided into absorbable and non-absorbable types.
